How to use Essential Oils

There are THREE ways to use essential oils. Aromatically, topically, and internally.

AROMATICALLY: The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system, which is the part of your brain that stores memories and emotions. There are many ways to use essential oils aromatically.

  • Diffusing in an essential oil diffuser

  • Applying 1-2 drops to the palm of your hand, cup your nose and mouth with your hands, and taking deep breaths

  • Smell the oil right out of the bottle

TOPICALLY: Essential oils easily penetrate the skin for localized benefits, making topical (on the skin) application a great way to experience the benefits of these oils, and one of my personal favorites! Some of the most beneficial areas you can apply oils to are the

  • Neck

  • Forehead and temples (unless the oil is classified as a “hot oil”)

  • Chest and abdomen

  • Arms, legs, bottoms of feet

There are some areas that you will want to avoid when applying oils topically.

  • Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes

  • Eyes and inner ears

  • Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

INTERNALLY: When ingested, essential oils directly enter the bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are then transported to all of the organs in our body, including the brain. Here are just a few of the ways we love using our oils internally.

  • Adding the oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks

  • Putting a drop under the tongue or on the roof of your mouth

  • Take in a veggie capsule

  • Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices.
